Hobbies are not only great for mental health, but for upskilling too. You wouldn’t believe how much you can learn from taking up a hobby as simple as cooking or reading! There are plenty of great hobbies out there you should try this summer. Here are just some of our favourites:

Paddleboarding

If you live near a canal, river, lake or the sea, paddleboarding is the perfect summer hobby for you! This low-impact workout is good for recovering from injuries as well, so it’s a great fitness option for many. On top of the fitness benefits, it’s super relaxing and can be awesome for mental health. It’s a chance to tear your eyes off of the screens and get out into nature, with literally no chance of hooking back up to devices seeing as you’re out in the middle of a body of water!

Running

It may feel like a chore to start, but once you’re out and running, there’s nothing better than a good jog to boost your mood! In fact, it’s one of the most versatile hobbies you could start. You can run anywhere, any time, for any length of time, which makes it the perfect hobby for those who lead a busy lifestyle. Whether you choose a scenic riverside run or quick city route, it’s a great chance to get out and soak up some sunshine in the summertime.

Cooking

It may not be taking advantage of the sunshine, but it’s certainly a chance to upskill. Cooking can be fun, informative and even therapeutic. Teaching yourself new recipes and new ways to cook will help you understand how certain flavours work together, and how to master certain techniques. This skill is certainly a handy one to have for so many reasons. You can use it to bake your friends a cake on their birthdays. You can use it to host dinner parties and impress your guests! You can cook your own meals instead of spending money on eating out. So many benefits!

Cycling

A sport you can do solo or with friends, cycling can be a great way to get out and see more of your surrounding area. Even if you never learnt to cycle as a kid, it’s never too late to start! Cycling will keep you active and healthy, as well as get you outdoors more often. If you crave something a little more adrenaline-inducing, you can even try BMX or mountain biking.

Reading

Another super versatile hobby, picking up reading is great for the eyes and for a digital device detox. You can choose light fiction reading or more complex novels, depending on what interests you the most. Pick up your book and take it anywhere you like! Head outside to your local park for a sunny read. Lay down a towel beachside and take in some chapters there. Maybe you just want to take a bubble bath and relax with a good book. So many great ways to get into reading.

Photography

Whether you already have some photography equipment, are looking to buy some or just want to take your phone camera for a test run, photography is a hobby many enjoy! You can do a little reading online to learn more about the photography basics such as shutter speed, ISO and aperture. Then there’s the composition techniques like rule of thirds and framing. There’s more to learn than you may first think! Head outside and capture a subject that intrigues you, whether it’s a bustling cityscape or bird in a tree. Our world is full of photographic opportunities once you start to look for them.
